Re: Yamaha S4

To add to my cold feet at spending such a lot, I've been reading that S4s lose their value really quickly - compared to C3s or similar more popular instruments. Stephen If we are staying with Yamaha then the C5 over the S4 for me but if not then the Bluthner Model 6 Take a look at this S/H Bluthner...

Re: Yamaha S4

But now I find that contributors here reckon it won't sound good for long because the tuning is unstable. Have I bought a turkey? I suppose it isn't too late to change my mind - please give me some advice! A piano life saver will help with the tuning stability problems Barrie, I'm not sure that wou...

Re: Yamaha S4

EXACTLY THAT!!!!!!!!!! TUBBY METALLIC BASS!!!!! yeah you know, it sounds like the S4 is a bit of a turkey .... such an expensive piano too! As you say Openwood, why bother? Oh dear! I've just paid a deposit on a new S4 which completely bowled me over in the shop when I tried it out - far better sou...

... don't expect a tech to produce, from the proverbial sow's ear, a silk purse. Use your loaf. Are you suggesting that I should use a loaf to produce a silk purse or that a Yamaha piano is a sow's ear? :P Actually I'm not expecting miracles from the tuner, but he reckons he can improve on the stan...

I still wonder why you bought a piano whose "sound" you dislike I suppose anyone who buys a new piano and then decides after a few weeks that it is too bright and they want to have it toned down is in the same position. In my case, the piano I bought is the only upright that Yamaha suppli...

OK thanks Barrie I'll tell the tuner that removing the action won't be a problem. And Sussexpianos: I tried a few pianos in the showroom and my impression was that the Yamaha had a clear and gutsy sound compared to the other instruments. At the time I hadn't touched a piano for 20 years so my ears/b...

Thanks to all for your help so far. I've just been talking to my local piano tuner about voicing the hammer felts. He says he'll do it if the piano action (the part with the hammers) can be lifted out without affecting any of the Disklavier mechanism, so that he can get at the felts properly to stic...

Thank you Openwood for your reply. It occurs to me that 'tweaking' the hammer felts like that might affect the resale value or the guarantee? I'm rather between a rock and a hard place about the Yamaha - if the sound is going to be drastically improved I might decide to keep it, but otherwise I don'...

New Yamaha upright sounds too "bright"

I bought a new Yamaha Disklavier (DYUS1A) 3 months ago and I have a problem with the sound it makes - basically I find it much too "bright" (ie harsh/cold/hard), which I gather is a feature common to new Yamahas. Can anything be done? My friendly local tuner said that he could soften up th...

I've just been talking to the dealer. He's OK with taking the new Disklavier DYUS1A back as a part-exchange but I'll have to accept a loss on the deal as he is required by law to sell it as a second-hand instrument He pointed out that if I wanted any cash back I'd lose out more than in a part-exchan...

Barrie - are you saying that athomik 's comment "there is no difference between a disklavier and its equivalent plain accoustic model" only applies to grands, and that the DYUS1A action is in fact heavier because of the Disklavier? If that is the case I shall have to replace the instrument...

Well, you've cleared up my concern that the extraneous noises, heavy touch and uneveness of tone or touch might be due to the Disklavier mechanism. Those problems should sort themselves out as the piano becomes 'played in' and after a piano technician has done any necesssary tweaking. However, that ...

Openwood: Thanks for your response (I saw it just now when I posted a reply to the earlier contributors), which is quite encouraging, and I'll send you a pm shortly. Indeed, the heavy action has been causing me considerable discomfort as well! I decided not to practice Hanon too assiduously because ...

From your replies it looks like my chances of getting a proper refund are pretty low, because the dealer probably won't regard the few weeks I've had the piano as a cooling off period in which I could be given a full refund if I change my mind about the purchase. So I reckon if I'm going to have to ...

No, the seller was a proper Yamaha dealer and I bought a piano I'd tried out at the showroom. Whether or not I could get a refund or exchange (bearing in mind I've only had a month to get used to the instrument) is one issue, but I'm really asking if anyone recommends I should stick with the new Dis...

I'm having doubts about my new Yamaha Disklavier ...

I used to be an accomplished pianist (ARCM) but hadn't touched a piano for decades. Having recently moved house and with some time to devote to a hobby, I decided to buy myself a piano as a gift. I'd seen adverts for Yamaha Disklaviers and I thought a computer-assisted instrument might help me recov...

New versus reconditioned Yamaha Disklavier uprights?

Hi there! I plan on buying a Disklavier piano. I'm a classically-trained pianist/composer interested in adding computer player-piano and MIDI/synthesizer techniques to my repertoire. After a weekend's Googling it looks like a Yamaha DU1A Disklavier Mark III upright (or similar) would probably suit m...
