Re: Richard Lipp & Sohn

I've begun cleaning out the innards of this piano, and discovered some pencil markings under the bass keys. More photos here: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/RealWorldDreamer/RichardLipp1stDaySCleanOut# These markings include 13/8 written as a vertical fraction, followed by the numeral 81. See these t...

Re: Richard Lipp & Sohn

That makes a lot of sense, Gill the Piano. I thought before I bought it that at least the top front panel, the knee panel and the legs had been changed - to me they look more 1930s than 1880s. What I'm still surprised by is the curves on the edge of the top lid, for example, and the rounded edges of...

Richard Lipp & Sohn

I've acquired an old Richard Lipp upright. It stands 144cm tall (nearly 57 inches), and is overstrung & under-dampered. There's a number on the top of the block of wood into which the top of the left hand side of the action sits: "10764". If this is the serial no. some websites suggest...

Re: Oetzmann and Plumb

I've created a new topic to carry on discussion of the Challen & Hodgson piano as it didn't really belong under this Oetzmann & Plumb heading - so search for "Challen & Hodgson" if you want to continue following this discussion.

Challen & Hodgson

Hello I've copied this discussion across from another topic (Oetzmann & Plumb - a different make of piano). I'd asked about the Challen & Hodgson piano pictured at this link: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=214067308 Bill Kibby had replied: "... this is not at all unusua...

Re: Oetzmann and Plumb

Thanks for all that information and explanation, Bill. Having just said that I'd not seen a piano with fretwork like that, I think I've come across an example such as you described - with cloth behind the fretwork. The link is here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Music-instruments/Instruments/Keyboards-pi...

Oetzmann and Plumb

Anyone know anything about this piano manufacturer, supposedly once based in London? A search on the forum returns no results, which in itself is unusual. One of their pianos is for sale on TradeMe, NZ's equivalent of E-Bay. This particular piano has unusual fretwork - essentially the front panel is...

Wilh. Bohm, Dresden

Hi there Does anyone have any information, web links, date founded etc., on this piano manufacturer? They don't appear to be listed in Pierce's Piano Atlas or the Blue Book or any of the piano date websites, and a search on Piano Forums also yielded no results for me. A friend has an upright made by...

Thirst for knowledge

From a parallel thread ("Books about pianos"), this recommendation from Longbow: There is a relatively new book out that is a rival to "Reblitz" titled "Upright & Grand Piano Repair" by Carl-Johan Forss. Not a very imaginative title but worth a read. Heckschers stoc...

Books about pianos

Openwood recently started a thread asking about technical books on the inner workings of pianos. In that line, I've recently acquired and read Arthur A Reblitz's "Piano Servicing, Tuning & Rebuilding". But this got me thinking thinking about other piano themed books I'd read, including...

I thought the point of underfloor heating was that one turned it on as the weather began to get colder, it sat on a steady temperature all through winter, and then one turned it off as spring brought warmer temperatures. Wouldn't consistency of temperature across a whole room (which the floor-up nat...

Amateur tuners

I have a slightly different take on this. If you are wanting to tune the piano yourself to save yourself money, don't, because you wont. However, if you have done a great deal of preparatory learning about what's involved specifically in piano tuning cf other instruments and PROVIDED THAT you realis...

Electronic digital vs strung acoustic - both please

I've had a real piano nearby since I was a child, and started learning officially at age 7. The straight-strung English piano I'd had for the last twenty years recently died (wont hold a tune anymore and not worth fixing). So I embarked on a hunt for its replacement - another real  piano, of c...

Post-shift tuning

What's the general rule of thumb about when to tune a piano after its been shifted? I've heard people say one should wait for a couple of months. Should one wait until the piano has had time to acclimatize to its new micro-climate, or have it tuned immediately? Would the advice be different if a pia...

Haines Bros. pianos

Hi there, anyone know anything much about Haines Bros. pianos? I've recently come across a monster of a Haines Bros. upright from the year 1900 in my part of the world (NZ). By monster, I mean a BFG, not an evil one  . It's 55 and 1/2 inches tall (141cm)! And cross strung at that. These are rar...

Played the UX5 today. It's actually a W X5, which I've never heard of, but appears to be a genuine Made in Japan, sold new in NZ, Yamaha. Serial no. 531 3167, which dates manufacture to 1994, by my calculation. Sold new here in NZ by a reputable mainstreet piano dealer, which is still in business. O...

Thanks athomix So all other things being equal, given the "action, materials and finishing are superior" on the "Y" series, it should have its nose in front, compared to the "X" series, or the ordinary U1, U3, U5. And "all other things being equal" is where al...

OK, thanks Bill.

No, nothing visible on, in or around the hammer rail, or any part of the action that I can see. And no label in the upper centre on the back of the sound board.

Oh well. Mid 1920s will have to do.

Thank you :D for your help. Bed time in my part of the world.

YU & UX models from Yamaha

So does the extra cross bracing on the YU and UX series Yamaha's indeed give greater tuning stability? Or is that mostly marketing? Are the YU and UX models a cut above the U5, U3 and U1? I mean musically (not furniture wise). And for someone who lives in an older house where there is considerable t...

Query re age of John Shenstone & Sons piano

Hi there. I have looked through the archives here, had a look at the pianogen website, and searched broadly on the Internet, but found little re Shenstone pianos. Bill's comment re the TV store might explain why! About 20 years ago I bought an old, straight strung John Shenstone & Sons piano for...
