Assessing pianos
A really nice attempt to get the Topic back on track there. Many, by no means all, piano tuners & technicians here in Australia would do piano assessing and/or valuing as a matter of course. I have to say that I think some of them are way off the beam at times, but I put that down to many of the...

why piano tuning is called an Art ...
Morning everyone, been a while since I contributed but couldn't let this subject go by without comment. All power to Arthur for wanting to make life easier for piano owners (and we tuners facing the prospect of a long retirement due to 'deafness' ... or more accurately, losing the ability to "d...

sticking keys in new pianos
Martha have just logged on for the first time in days and read about your saga with the kawai. Generally speaking I have to concur with Barrie on most of the advice given. Your G that doesn't ring as long as almost definitely a damper-head alignment problem. Not uncommon, as in that part of the pian...

Brinsmead's
.... to which I would add Gill, most of the Brinsmead's prior to 1900 seemed to have cedar shanks (that's the little 4" dowel that connects the hammer to the hammer butt)and at this age they can get very brittle and snap easily.

piano strings and raising to pitch
Just offering my $2 worth on this one. Yes, the piano should come up to pitch but there are ways and means of doing it that ensure some success. Note that, in raising a standard sized upright from a semi-tone flat to A-440 the Tuner is increasing the overall tension on the plate by approximately 2 t...

Ronisch
happy to be of service in some way. It really is a routine fix, but should always be qualified against the age of the piano. Contrary to popular belief, these instruments were not made to last forever, and the builders themselves would be amazed to find that the caseine and animal glues they used we...

Ronisch upright
Traditionalist though I am, if your Ronisch is 1870 its starting to get a little long in the tooth. But, I doubt its that old since you say its an under-damper action piano with over-dampers in the bass. So, would think it more likely 1890's. The Pierce Piano Atlas is reasonably accurate with Ronisc...

Ronisch Grands
We have a few Ronisch Grands in Australia from the 1900-1915 era, and I have a couple of regular clients with them that I tune and/or service. Nice pianos, but not in the same class as the 3 Crown Ronisch upright of the same period. The latter really are one of the best pianos of the pre-war era, (s...
